Part 1. Purpose Statement:

É«ÖÐÉ« believes that diversity is essential to its daily operations and seeks to promote access and opportunity for all. É«ÖÐÉ« recognizes that disability is an aspect of diversity and students with disabilities must be ensured equitable access to programs, opportunities, and activities at the College.

This procedure outlines how students with disabilities can request accommodations, continue to receive accommodations, and grieve accommodation decisions.

Part 2. Scope/Applicability

This procedure applies to students who need accommodations due to a disability.

Part 3. Definitions

Accommodations - Academic accommodations are legally mandated modifications, adjustments, auxiliary aids, and/or services that give a student with a disability an equal opportunity to benefit from the educational process.  Reasonable accommodations may include modifications to: rules, policies, or practices; the removal of architectural, communication, or transportation barriers; provision of auxiliary aids or the provision of equally effective programs, services, or activities. In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, accommodations will not be provided 1) for personal devices or services even though the individual may be a qualified individual with a disability, or 2) that result in a fundamental alteration in the nature of a service, program, or activity or in undue financial or administrative burdens.

Access - a qualified individual with a disability will not be excluded from participation in or be denied the benefits of the programs, services, or activities

Individual with a disability - Any person who has a physical or mental impairment which materially limits one or more of the person's major life activities. Anyone with a record of such impairment, which means they have a history of or have been classified as having a mental or physical impairment that materially limits one or more major life activities.

Part 4. Requesting an Accommodation

Requests for accommodation must be initiated by the student.

  1. To receive an accommodations and other support, students must make an appointment with Disability Services staff.   2. At this meeting Disability Services staff will work with the student to determine if the student is eligible for services, explore what barriers the student is experiencing or anticipating, and determine ways to remove barriers through accommodations. 
    • To establish if a student has a disability, Disability Services may request documentation of the disability from a doctor, therapist, or school staff stating that the student has a disability. Disability Services staff will ensure that documentation remains confidential following the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).  
  3. Faculty will be notified by email of an approved student accommodation for students registered in their class that requires their involvement.
    • Some accommodations require additional communication with Disability Services. For example, students with testing accommodations will need to make testing appointments. Accommodations processes will be outlined by Disability Services staff and outlined in the accommodation emails. 
  4. To continue receiving services, students must request accommodation each semester. Reminders and instructions to renew are sent to students via email. Meeting with staff is not required for renewal unless changes to accommodations are requested.

Any supports or changes made do not apply to past work, so it is important to meet with Disability Services as soon as possible. The same academic standards must be met by all students; basic requirements and standards cannot be changed by accommodations.

Part 5. Appeal

This grievance process can be used in cases when a student has followed the procedures to request accommodations and the request has been denied or otherwise not provided. 

  1. Contact the Director of the Academic Support Center by writing or emailing within 30 days of the incident.
  2. If an informal resolution is not reached through step one, students should make a formal complaint using the SCC Student Complaint Form. Complaints submitted through this form follow the Complaint/Grievance Procedure.   

Students also may file a complaint directly with the or with the . The Statute of Limitations for filing a complaint with the Office for Civil Rights is 180 days from the date the incident occurred.
