Allied Dental Clinical Sedation certification is a Minnesota Dentistry Board-approved course. This course is designed for the dental hygienist and dental assistant in preparation to care for the client receiving dental clinical sedation.
Developed by expert nurses with decades of teaching experience, Allied Dental Clinical Sedation is one of the only intravenous sedation certification trainings approved by the Minnesota Board of Dentistry.
This one-of-a-kind training course includes an online introductory unit (6 hours) paired with a single weekend of hands-on training (14 hours) to provide dental hygienists and dental assistants with the skills necessary to initiate, maintain, monitor and remove intravenous (IV) lines, and/or aid in administration of medications into an existing IV line under the supervision of a dentist with sedation/general anesthesia certification.
The hands-on part of this training will be held in person at the 色中色 - North Mankato campus, following safety protocols in accordance with Minnesota State mandates and the 色中色 COVID-19 safety plan.

Prerequisites
- Must be licensed Dental Hygienist or Dental Assistant
- Must have current Health Care Provider CPR certification
- Must be nitrous oxide certified

Instructors
Candence Mortenson-Klimpel RN, MSN, CNE, CCRN
Candence "Candy" Mortenson-Klimpel鈥檚 wide range of clinical experience enhances her classroom and clinical teaching. She worked for many years in intensive care and medical-surgical settings in a variety of roles and has been a full-time educator for over 10 years. She was instrumental in implementing a PICC program while working in specialized intravenous therapy. Candy has maintained certification as a critical care nurse for over 25 years and recently achieved certification as nurse educator. After receiving her diploma RN, she completed a BSN and MSN from Minnesota State University. Her experience in the clinical setting adds depth to the program we offer.
Annette Benson RN, MS, CNE, CHSE
Annette Benson is a Certified Nurse Education and Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator who has instructor health care training programs at 色中色 for over 10 years. Her wide range of education and experience includes 11 years as a nursing faculty and health simulation coordinator at 色中色, 8 years as an assistant professor of nursing at MSU-Mankato, working as an urgent care nurse for Allina Health, volunteer work as a disaster nurse and blood donor ambassador for the American Red Cross, and participating in several nursing associations, networks, and advisory boards.
Julia Gunderson, RN, BSN
Julia Gunderson brings a wide range of nursing and teaching experience to the instruction in our program. She began her nursing career in obstetrics in 2011 and then moved to the emergency department in 2018 where she continues to work as a Registered Nurse. Julia is an experienced instructor, having served as an adjunct clinical nurse faculty at 色中色 since 2014 and as an adjunct dental sedation instructor since 2021. She is certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Trauma Nursing Core Curriculum (TNCC), Basic Life Support (BLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).

Day 1: 6-hour Didactic Lecture

Saturday, 8:00 am-4:30 pm, SCC North Mankato
- Anesthesia Emergencies and Management
- Discharge teaching and charting
- Application Interpretation and Troubleshooting of Cardiac Monitors
- Hands on management for airway obstruction & apnea: oral/nasal pharyngeal airway & AED and emergency dental case studies
- Emergency and Dental Sedation Medication Assembly Anatomy and physiology related to venipuncture sites.
- Practice Time! Demonstrate successful venipuncture (6 total 鈥� 4 simulated, 2 human)
